The idea behind reciprocal links is very basic:

an agreement is made between two websites to show each other's link information. The link can be on a particular page or somewhere within the website.

Link exchanges are becoming "big business" on the Internet. More and more website are actively participating in link exchanges, either individually or through a program. Webmasters are realizing that getting the links simply produces incredible traffic, not to mention, and more importantly, improve your standings in the Search Engines.

Reciprocal links can be done through text, buttons, and/or banners.

Text exchanges are the easiest and what we recommend to use since:

• it usually involves only a few lines of HTML code
• it is easy to update and manage
• it does not have to take up considerable space on the webpage which keeps the webpage's upload time down
• the anchor text (the text describing the link) is an important area for Search Engine optimizing

Search Engine Considerations When Exchanging Links

You build links for two reasons:

promote traffic to your website
&
increase your search engine rankings

Search Engines, such as Google or Altavista, will look closely at your Link Popularity. Who is linking to you? Who do you link to? These are questions the search engines ask.

The number of links are important but it is the theme or topic of the links which is even more so. Having links pointing to you from websites within your theme or topic, will cause your website to be seen as being more "important" then a website with just has bunch of random links

Finally, using text links provides an added bonus. The text used to describe a link can help with search engine ranking. If that text contains a targeted keyword, then the search engines will looked upon that link more "favorable" or see it being more pertinent.

Example: FreeBizSites at www.freebizsites.com is a small business resource site. The instead of having the link look like FreeBizSites, you would want to use an important keyword phase such as Small Business Resources. Both would have the same URL but it is how it is described is what makes a difference to how the search engines view and index it.

To run a good reciprocal links section on your website, it takes some effort. Link building does not happen over night.

One of the first things you need to decide is which websites to exchange links with. Not every website out there that does link exchanges is right for you. You want to exchange links with a website that will bring targeted traffic (visitors/customers that are interested in what you have to offer).

Exchanging links with websites that have similar or complimentary themes or topics, should produce the best targeted traffic.

Once you find a website to exchange links, how do you ask for a reciprocal link? Send the webmaster an email.

In the email, state your:

• name,
• your URL
• where their link is located on your website
• what you like about their site and
• why it would be mutually beneficial to exchange links

Try not to use "pre-made emails". Show the webmaster that you actually visited their website and you know what you are talking about. Sending blind, bulk emails out is not a good idea.

Someone who has actually looked over our website before emailing us is more likely to get a link since they have taken the time to review our website and rules.
